The high-speed AVE train covers the distance between the two cities in a bit over 2.5 hours. There are frequent departures, almost hourly though most of the day. It is smooth and very comfortable. Buy your tickets 62 days in advance on Renfe to get a 60% discount. Or if you are a senior (60+) you can get a discount of 25% to 40% without the advance purchase if you buy a Tarjeta Dorada (discount card) for 5 euros.
