I am trying to figure out the best way to book this for the lowest price. Should I book ahead or wait until arriving in Barcelona? Help!!! Thanks!

Can the tickets be prepurchased on the website for Spanish trains?

You can buy this ticket on the Renfe website. It looks like thre is one train a day, departing Barcelona at 16:42. The regular price is 39 euros. Normally you can get nice discounts by purchasing on Renfe 60 to 62 days in advance, but right now the trains for August 24 are not showing up, so you can't tell what the discount might be. Just keep checking to familiarize yourself with the website. You have to go to "purchase" to see the disounted fares. They don't show up under "schedules."

I swore off the Renfe website long ago and won't return until I read that it has become user friendly. Go to the German rail website to get schedules. For a week from today, 6/30, there are 10 trains from Barcelona to Perpignan. At the present time it shows 4 trains for 10/1. Note that you can't purchase the ticket through them. http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml

But 9 of those 10 trains involve a change somewhere, take 40 minutes to 2 hours longer, and cannot be purchased ahead on Renfe.com, at least not all the way to Perpignan.

I have looked at the Bahn site. I want to actually purchase the tickets. If there is no advantage to purchasing in advance, I can wait until I arrive in Barcelona. I assumed there would be better fares for an advance purchase. Thanks for the help.

Andrea, I have looked at various date on Renfe and they do not appear to offer a discounted fare for the direct train, even for advance purchase. You could try checking on TGv-Europe just to sure. But maybe your best option is to buy at the station in Barcelona where you will have the full range of choices.

We traveled that route last year and found it was very simple to just purchase your tickets once you arrive in Barcelona. I was initially pretty nervous about it, but there were a variety of options available that took a bit longer but were also much less expensive.

Thanks! I think we will just wait until we arrive.
