Train- Frankfurt to Milan

I am trying to get train reservations out of Frankfurt Main to Milan. It routes me either through Bern or Basal.A seat reservation is required from there to Milan but it keeps coming back with the message that "all seats are full" and rejects my attempted reservation. Any suggestions? Is it too early to book for May?

Be a little more specific, please. It depends. What website are you using? Are you trying to get a ticket with reservation, or a reservation to use with a rail pass? What date in May? All these things could matter. The Bahn won't sell you a reservation only (without a ticket) for international travel. The Bahn is not yet selling tickets for late May. I seem to be able to book a ticket with reservation on the Bahn website up to giving a credit card number (which I am not going to do) for mid May.

Ticket is for May 9. I was using the Bahn website and trying to buy a ticket and a seat reservation. I did okay for the first part of the travel out of Frankfurt to Bern or Basal but not past that. I do not have a Railpass.

Deborah, You can also book the entire journey (including reservations) via the Swiss train site ( sbb.ch) and have it delivered to you at home via DHL - tickets 123 CHF and delivery charges of 45 CHF. Best Regards, Jim.

You need to booke separate tickets from Germany -Switzerland and Switerzland-Italy The cheapest way to do that is book a ticket Frankfurt - Chiasso and a Chiasso-Milano. Make sure the train number to/from Chiasso matches, so that you are actually travelling on the same train.

"You need to booke separate tickets from Germany -Switzerland and Switerzland-Italy" That is more or less true, but the Bahn apparently has some kind of an agreement with SBB where you can book out of country segment as part of a trip starting in Germany, as long as the segments are on express train starting in Switzerland. Thus the Bahn shows the connection by ICE 275 to Bern and continuing on EC 57 from Bern to Milan Central as bookable online from their website. Note: the second half of that connection, the EC from Bern to Milan, would not be bookable online from the Bahn because it does not start in Germany. I ran a mock booking for that connection (Ffm - Milan) on May 9 and was able to proceed right up to the point of putting in my CC#. Deborah, have you been able to get this far?

As of a moment ago I could have booked either Frankfurt-Bern-Milan or Frankfurt-Basel-Milan on bahn.de and gotten a discount fare of €93.00 for either route.

This is the problem I am running into. I get all the way through the site, enter all the info for Frankfurt Main to Milan Centrale, enter my credit card # and "purchase" and I get this " no more seats are available on this train for which a reservation is cumpulsory". I have tried numerous times of departure etc and always get the same answer. This is on the bahn.de site.
All looks well until that point. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I am finally all squared away. Had to book separately for Bern to Milan on sbb.railway, can't do it all through bahn.de even though it looks like you can on the web site.
