Is 5 minutes enough time (for first time train travelers) to change trains in Mainz when traveleing from Frankfurt to Bacharach? DB website says train arrives at Platform 1a and departs from Platform 11, but I can't find either on the Mainz train station map.

I'll find the map for you in a few minutes. In the meantime, don't worry. That is simple change. Track 1 is the closest track to the station building. Track 11 dead ends against one end of the building, so it is actually a "across-platform change. By the way, the Germans use the word "Gleis" for track. Wow, if you were looking at the Bahnhofsplan on the Bahn website, no wonder you were confused. It's terrible. This map (from the Frankfurt metro site), is a much better view. Note Gleis 1 is nearest the station and Gleis 11 is on the right hand side across the platform. The train you are coming in on is a short train and only takes one end of the platform, hence 1a. A layout from my own personal collection show the 'A' part of Gleis 1 should be at the same end as Gleis 11.
