Hi all! Really need you help! Will be traveling to Frankfurt on May 17-20 and would like to get your opinion on the cheapest transpo to visit Neuschwanstein and Rothenburg. Please help!! Thank you!! :) :) :)
If you are going to be IN Frankfurt (not arriving by air that day), and you can rely on making a specific train, you can book a Saving Fare online in advance from the Bahn website for the ICE to Würzburg and regional trains from Würzburg to Rothenburg via Steinach. That trip will take about 3 hours and the lowest such fare I see now is €29/p. On the other hand, you can take the RE (Regional Express) from Frankfurt to Würzburg and regional trains from there to Rothenburg in only about 20 min more. For that connection (all regional) you can use local RMV tickets (€7,30/p) to Kahl am Main, the first stop on the RE in Bavaria, and a Bayern-Ticket, €29 for up to five people, for the rest of the way to Rothenburg. That's about €22 each. In Kahl, you don't have to change trains, just tickets. The Bayern-Ticket will be available from a Bahn ticket automat for €29 or from the counter in Frankfurt for €31. In the case of Rothenburg to Füssen, I would just use a Bayern-Ticket and regional trains. Express trains (ICE/IC) part of the way would be a little faster, but full fare would be a lot more expensive and advance purchase fares would still cost a little more but require advance purchase and commit you to a specific express train.
