I can't seem to get the SNCF web site to give me the fare price from Paris to Caen. There will be 2 of us, and we are in the over age 60 category. We'll arrive at CDG on 9/8/09 and need to immediately head to Caen, then return to Paris on 9/10/09. This will be the extent of our major train travel on this trip - the rest will be on the Paris Metro and whatever we need to do to get back to CDG on 9/17/09 for our flight back to the US. Am I correct that a railpass isn't going to save us any on this trip?
Michael - A second class ticket to Caen from Paris' St. Lazare station is about 30 Euro, according to the SNCF website.
A 3 day senior France railpass is $268 on Rick's website.
I suggest buying your tickets when you get there.
The reason you couldn't get fares is that you were looking too far ahead. You can book up to three months in advance on the SNCF site. While the standard fare is €29.80, a Prems fare booked online can be as low as €15. That ticket is non-exchangeable and non-refundable. Not a problem for Caen-Paris. However, if you want to book discount tickets for Paris-Caen, leave 4 hours (in case your flight is late) between your scheduled arrival at CDG and your scheduled departure from Gare St-Lazare.
