Hi all! I am planning a train trip from Paris to Rome with my family and would like your opinions on the duration time because it is actually different from what google or raileurope.com is telling me (got it from the german rail website Rick talked about in his book). City Duration from Paris Chatele/Les Halles 6:24 to Interlaken Ost from Interlaken Ost 2:24 Montreux Montreux 20:40 Venezia Santa Lucia Venezia Santa Lucia 10 mins Venezia Mastre Venezia Mastre 5:43
Rome Termini Please tell me if this sounds like a legitimate train itinerary, and if the duration hours/minutes look right. I'm especially wondering about Montreux to Venezia because other sources (google, raileurope) says it takes about 5 ~ 6 hours whereas the german railwebsite says it will take about 20 hours. Thanks !!!!
That seems a very long way round with many changes. Why not try the French Railways (SNCF) website. It offers the following options, all from Paris Gare de Lyon. 1. 07.49 Change at Turin. Arrive Rome 18.05 2. 08.23 Change at Bale and Milan.Arrive Rome 19.55 3. 09.11 Change at Geneva and Milan. Arrive Rome 20.59 4. 10.41 Change at Turin. Arrive Rome 21.05 The website (in French) is at http://www.voyages-sncf.com.
I assume you are visiting these places, not simply going from Paris to Rome. The itinerary is fine but some of the times are wrong. Paris ( Gare de Lyon) to Interlakennis 5 hours with one change in Basel. There is a direct train from Montreux to Venice in 6 hours. It looks like bahn.de gave you a night train instead. Venice to Rome is also much faster on the ES train, but I didn't look up the time. Use Trenitalia and you may see a discount ( mini) fare as low as 9 euros.
Yeah I am planning to visit Venice before I go to Rome. And also we want to take the Golden Pass from Interlakken to Montreux. Sorry I forgot to mention that. So, the hours are ok except for the Montreux to Venice?
And I know you mentioned one but which train would be the best (if available) to take on those routes? I will be travelling with my wife and a toddler. Thanks!!!
The German Rail (Bahn) website shows one of you routes, from Monteux to Venice (Montreux to Brig to Milan to Venice) in 6h44min with 3 changes (the last one being in Venice Mestre to the shuttle to Venice S.L.).
The best option is shown on the Swiss rail site (rail.ch). EC 37 departs Montreux at 8:38 am and takes you to Venice (not Mestre) in 6 hours with no changes, arriving at 14:40. The train with no changes would be best with a toddler.
the last one being in Venice Mestre to the shuttle to Venice S.L.) Lee, The info's great but there's no "shuttle" between Ve.Mestre and Ve.SL. There is an extremely frequent service of regional, milk trains which even stop twice more before Santa Lucia, and expresses of various flavours. There is almost always less than 10 minutes between trains. Virtually any train going to Santa Lucia will stop at Mestre. I always have a ticket to Ve.SL and jump on anything but a Frecca from Mestre over the causeway. I've never seen a ticket check between the two stations.
