Train Costs Budapest to Prague

I'm trying to estimate costs for a train (7 hours) during the day from Budapest to Prague (really trying to figure out if global Eurail is worth it with our itinerary or just stay with a 3 country Eurail and pay the other countries point to point).

I've tried to use the Hungary rail website and can't figure it out. I went to Rail Europe and of course it's showing me like $730 for 4 people in first class which seems a bit high.

Anyone know how I can figure out the point to point cost versus having the global Eurail that covers Budapest (but not Slavakia and Czech Republic portions)?

Most national rail websites only show the price for travel totally within the country (Germany shows fares for travel into and out of the country as long as it is still on the same train, but they are the exception).

I assume you would be going through Austria on the trip from Budapest to Prague. You can ask Austrian Rail, by email or phone, for the price of ticket from Budapest to Vienna and from Vienna to Prague. Alternatively, you can get the route from German Rail and then go to the other website and get the fare for the parts entirely in one country (e.g. Vienna to Hohenau and Breclaw to Prague) and put them together. It won't be exact, but it will be close.

Thanks Lee. The route is actually through Slovakia if I'm reading the www.bahn.de website correctly which is why I haven't even looked at the Austrian rail website.

Lee - I had a thought - on the Euraide website they list a sleeper train Budapest to Prague (I'm looking at a 7 hour day time train and this night train is showing a longer time and it doesn't show me route) and the seats w/o a pass are 92 Euro each for first class seat on that sleeper car. Do you think that is likely a close price even though it's pricing an overnight train (and possibly through Austria)?

Ali,

EC 170, Hungaria, leaves Budapest at 9:30 and gets into Prague at about 4:30 PM. It goes through Slovakia (Sturovo, Bratislava, Kuty) to Breclav in the Czech Republic. Breclav is about the half way point (297km from Budapest, 314km to Prague). Czech Rail shows the 2nd class fare from Breclav to Prague as 385 Kc (about $21). So, I would tend to believe that the 2nd class fare for the whole route is more like $42, maybe $50. First class fares are generally 50% more than 2nd class, so $92 ($88?) seems a little high.
