train cost vrs. plane cost-back to the drawing board

Thanks to all who have great info on trains. However, I am wondering if anyone might shed some insight on a cheap flight on either the evening of April 7th, or the morning of April 8th, going from Venice to the Avignon area. The 12 hour train ride for a sleeper would be pricey and we would like to fly if cheaper and more time efficient. Thanks to everyone for your help. This helpline is amazing.

The only airline that flies non-stop is a Swiss discount airline, Baboo (yep, odd name) at www.flybaboo.com . They're offering one-ways Venice-Nice for 83 Euro, pp, all charges included. These are non-refundable, non-changeable tickets, but you do get 1 suitcase at 44 lbs and a carry-on at 17.6 lbs without extra charge. They fly turbo-prop aircraft, so don't expect a jumbo jet....but their safety regulations are the same as every other Swiss or European airline. There are still tickets available for 7 April. Then take a train from Nice to Avignon, booking on the tgv-europe.com site.

As an add....the three best websites to check for discount airlines around Europe are www.whichbudget.com, www.flylc.com, and www.skyscanner.net. flylc can come up with a booking engine if you select a particular airline. Don't use it....note the airline(s) flying the routes you want, then go directly to the airlines' websites so you don't miss any of their check-in, boarding, and luggage rules.

Thanks, Jeff...that's a much better solution! Even tho Lyon is farther away from Avignon than Nice, it's on the TGV line. The easyjet flight gets in at @ 5 pm....then there's a 1:10 TGV run at 7:04 pm for 34 Euro, a 1:13 TGV run at 7:33 pm for 23 Euro...and a 1:28 run at 9:07 pm for 28.80 Euro...that one includes your bus fare to Avignon Centre from the TGV station (You'll be able to take the bus to connect with all the other trains as well...you may just have to wait a bit longer for the bus to arrive.)
