We are planning on going from Basel to Zermatt to Gimmelwald (not Grindelwald) and then on to Fussen, Germany in June (wish we could of got the 1 for 2 deal in May). I've had a hard time understanding which private lines are covered by the Eurail Pass and the Swiss Pass. So my question is: 1. What are the prices with each pass for the Visp to Zermatt section. 2. What are the prices or discounts for each pass from Interlaken to the Gimmelwald area (ie does it cover bus service, gondola service, etc)? We are just trying to figure out which is the best deal. Thanks!
Have you seen the comparison chart on the Railpass page on this website? It explains the difference very well. Basically, a Swiss Pass should fully cover travel to a village, whether you go by train, bus, boat or cablecar. So it will take you all the way to Zermatt, and to Gimmelwald. The cabelcar above Mürren is 50% off. A Eurail (or 2-country) pass does not fully cover the private railways, so from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen only 25%. I don't think it works on th ebus to Stechelberg at all, but check the chart on that. Smae with Visp to Zermatt--the Swiss Pass covers it; the Eurail pass only a portion.
