I am stil trying to figure out whether it is feasable to drive or take the train from Venice to Lake Como/Dolomites. I think we will only have time for Lake Como, but my husband wants to drive because we will have my parents with us and they have limited mobility. First of all, if we take the train, what would be the preferred route to get there? Second, if we do rent a car, my husband is familiar with driving a manual (we own a car with stick) however my brother in law thought that the driver's side is on the opposite side of the united states. Is this the case? Thank you
The drivers side is on the left, just as it in the U.S. and driving is on the right.
Lake Como and the Dolomites are in different directions from Venice. Lake Como is to the west, the Dolomites are to the north.
If mobility is an issue, driving would be easier. In Venice picking up a rental car is easy. You leave from the main parking garage and go right onto the Autostrada - if going to Como you would drive towards Milan and then follow the signs.
Thanks Doug. I guess I mispoke when I said the Dolomites. The area I was talking about was going from Como to Lugano. Sounds like driving should be fine. Do you know if the cars are set up the same way in Ireland. We're going to be driving there as well.
They drive on the left in Ireland with the steering wheel on the right. We are going there next month and I rented an automatic. I didn't want to have to worry about driving on the opposite side and shift with my left hand!
Two things about renting a car in Italy. 1) by Italian law, you must have an International Drivers License. You can get these for $15 at any AAA office. Oddly, the rental car companies will rent you a car without one. I'ts only when you get stopped by the police that it becomes an issue. 2) I think that most rental cars in Italy are stick shift.
