Train & Bus travel in Normandy, France

We have train tickets from Paris to Rennes, France arriving in Rennes at 11:14 AM on Friday, May 11. What is the best way to get to Mont St. Michel from Rennes? Next we have train tickets from Rennes to Bayeux leaving Rennes at 8:25 AM. on Saturday May 12. Can we get bus transportation from Mont St Michel to Rennes in time to catch the early train or should we change our tickets and take a train from Pontorson to Bayeux. (I've heard that there is a train leaving Pontorson at 10:01 AM for Bayeux, but I don't know for sure.) Do you know if it would be the same train that goes from Rennes to Bayeux?

http://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/en/Acces-au-mont-saint-michel.htm This is the page that shows your 'access' options; click on "See railway access" for your options. I don't know what 5 miles of taxi could possibly cost b/n MSM and Pontorson...or if you could scare one up at that time of the morning. I have tried everything and cannot find your train on May 12! I wanted to see what time your Rennes - Bayeux train would be in Pontorson; you could just get on at that point... Getting to/from MSM ain't for sissies :-(

At Rennes train station, just ask to be pointed to the large, nearby bus terminal. It's a very short walk. I seem to remember the bus taking a little over an hour, through some pretty countryside. Getting back from MSM to Rennes for an early train is a problem. In the same situation last fall, I remember having to stay overnight in Rennes to catch a very early train. The nice part of that was that it gave me an extra day in MSM and I was able to take the last late afternoon bus leaving MSM. The bus service is quite limited. Here's where I found my information. http://www.destination-montsaintmichel.com/en/mont-saint-michel-times-valid-until-the-6th-of-july-2013-p0-C50.html Other possibilities would be a taxi (which you'd probably need to prearrange) or renting a car. But even then, you'd be leaving MSM very early in the morning to catch such an early train. In your position, I would spend Saturday at SMS, take a late afternoon bus back to Rennes for an overnight, and then catch the train Sunday morning.

Bonnie, your train from Rennes to Bayeux stops at Mont St. Michel (Pontorson). It is the same train.
