I'm planning on booking a train from Paris to Munich through Rail Europe. Does anyone have another option that they would recommend?
Any other option is better than Rail Europe. For a connection leaving Paris at 11:24, arriving in Munich at 17:31, Rail Europe's price is $257. The counter price in Europe is $197 (€137), and you can get that from the Bahn any day. With advance purchase, which is what you are doing on RE anyway, the Europa-Spezial fare is $56 (€39).
Either www.bahn.de or www.sncf.com, the national rail sites of Germany and France respectively, may offer better full fare prices, plus they often offer discounts for early purchase. Bahn may be easier to work with.
You can book with SNCF, but it only offers discount fares from Paris to a connecting point in Germany. You'll pay full fare from that point to Munich. (There is one direct train per day for which you could get a €39 Prem's fare.) Book well in advance on the German Rail site (up to 92 days allowed) to get the €39 Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare for departure times that require a connection.
Thank you all for your help. I just checked the price on DB Bahn for the same train I was looking at (non stop from Paris to Munich), and it's only about $15 cheaper than Rail Europe.
$15? I don't know what you are doing. For Aug 30, I just found an advance purchase ticket (what you are doing anyway when you purchase from RailEurope) for that train for €89 ($126), 1st class. Rail Europe best price is $185 plus shipping. If you purchase far enough ahead you can get the 1st class fare for $98 or 2nd class for $55.
Thanks again Lee. I just booked and you all saved me around $50.
