Train apps: Omio versus Trainline (or go direct to Italo or Trenitalia.com)

I know you can buy train tickets in Italy in the station or on the websites of the two main trains - Italo (private) or Trenitalia (government run). On well known travel websites I have read about apps: Omio or Trainline that are supposed to be easier to figure out which train line, Italo or Trenitalia, you want to take and book your tickets with just a small booking fee. Has anyone used Omio or Trainline and can recommend one over the other?

Always buy your tickets directly from TrenItalia or Italo for best prices. Both have downloadable apps. I have used the TrenItalia app many times and found it very easy to use. Only thing to remember is you must use Italian spelling of stations. I haven’t used the Italo app.

the Italo app, very very easy to use, understands American versions of spelling station names

The Trenitalia app is very easy to use. Just returned from Italy and used it many times on the fly. I really recommend it. Note: if your ticket is such that a seat assignment is available, be sure to toggle the choose seat button at the bottom of the page of the ticket you are buying!

If I know there is only one company offering train service on a route (e.g. Trenitalia), I often go directly to that company's website to see info and buy tix. However, seems like you are looking for a place to see combined info from multiple companies. For this, I find Trainline to be great. I've used it for routes in Italy, Austria, and Germany. Trainline shows the various companies / choices together in a very user friendly way to let you compare. They do charge a small fee, maybe 5 Euro, but for me it's well worth it for the extra convenience. Have a great trip!.
