Changing trains in Antwerp only allows six minutes. Is this enough time? Has anyone gone this route through Antwerp to Bruge? Otherwise you go to Brussels and back which takes longer. Thank you.
Six minutes is pushing it in Antwerp Central as platforms are on three different levels. Might be just about OK if you don't have heavy luggage. The tickets shouldn't be tied to specific trains though, so if you do miss a train you won't have to rebook.
Hi Linda, at which station is Antwerp are you changing trains? There are two: Centraal station or Berchem station? 6 minutes is tight but definitely manageable. But no time for delays or it will be a miss. Advice: once you disembark at Antwerp station, look for the big billboards (in yellow paper) on the platform for your next train connection and its other platform. In case you need to change at Antwerp Centraal, take even more care as the train platforms there are in 3 layers (yes!), ie. basement level, middle level and ground level (sort of stacked upon each other - very unique!). In case you arrive in the basement and need to go all the wqay up to ground level, you must be very fast! However, dont despair, as should you miss, it is never far to the next train departure to Brugge (may have to go via Brussels). Or even better, stroll out and explore Antwerp which I personally like more than Brugge. Brugge has charm and is romantic though touristy, but Antwerp is rich in architecture, history, lively downtown and Dutch paintings! happy travel.
If your trains are on different levels, six minutes can be a little tight at Antwerpen Centraal, especially if you get stuck behind slow people on the escalators. But as the others have pointed out, your ticket shouldn't be tied to any one train. If you miss one, you can take the next train 30 minutes later. There's no reason go through Brussels.
Thank you for your responses. It seems odd that they would only allow for 6 minutes to change trains but it must be able to be done. If we miss one, we can go and explore Antwerp for an hour.
I travelled the opposite direction in 2009 - Bruges to Amsterdam with a change at Antwerp Centraal. My train arrived on the top level and the Amsterdam train departed from the bottom level. Not certain whether it would be the same now. You might ask a conductor or nearby passengers. Also, escalators are probably faster than the elevators unless you can catch an elevator right away.
