My wife and I are going to the Lorie Valley, via train, and we want to hook up with a tour. What is the best tour while in the lorie valley? We don't want the mini-van tour from Paris
Acco-Dispo and other companies have half and full-day tours out of Amboise or Tours. You can go on-line and pick a tour that interests you. Read carefully because some of the chateaux you visit while others you "view". If you google Amboise tourist office, you might find the other names of companies that arrange tours. They are all very similar.
Although I haven't gone yet, my research has shown that many chateaux are not easily accessible unless you have a car or lots of time to catch trains leaving Tours.
I did an Acco-Dispo tour from Tours in 2006 and found it to be great, as long as you read carefully and make sure you're stopping at the chateaux you really want to see. (I'd recommend Chambord as a "biggie." The dogs at Cherverny are adorable.)
I've also done Amboise and Chenonceaux on my own, just using the trains and bus. That also worked out just fine. The castle at Amboise is so-so, but the town is fairly nice. Chenonceau is a top chateau.
Good luck!
