Tour guides vs. car rental in Tuscany/Umbria

My husband and my mother and I will be in Tuscany/Umbria in April. We were originally planning on basing out of Sienna and making day trips with a tour guide. My thinking was that a tour guide could do the driving, knew all the right places to see, and would keep us moving on a schedule (any tour guide recommendations would be appreciated). I thought I had it all figured out but this plan is looking pretty pricey. Is it feasible to rent a car with a GPS and follow Rick's iteneraries. We will only be there for 3 1/2 days.

I reserved a car to pick up in Florence and return to Padua for a trip that will take us through Tuscany, Umbria, a bit of Emilia-Romagna and finally into the Veneto. We only need a small car, but we were surprised to find that Avis had by far the lowest prices, and the pricing was in $$. With all taxes, the price for an economy car for nine days was about $165 cheaper than any other rental we saw.

With a car, consider staying on the outskirts of Siena, rather than in town. We booked a few days in what appears to be a clean, simple farm house only 4 km from the city, Farm Home San Giorgio - Monteroni d'Arbia. The rate is only about 70 Euros/night for a double, but apartment-style accommodations are available, too. Booking is through the Venere booking service. http://www.venere.com/hotel/index.php?htid=160644&ref=29799
