I have a week to spend between Milan and Rome. I have been through but never in Turin and Genoa. I am primarily interested in art museums. I am only going to make hit and run stops obviously. Should these cities be skipped given the choices I have to make and they sound like being rather difficult to tour. Thanks for any opinions. Also I appreciate the replies to my earlier questions!
To me the value of Torino was the Egyptian museum there but nothing else. Genoa is a working port town.
That being said. Perhaps you could allow time in Milan for Last Supper. Other than that for art museums I wold spend the remaining time in Florence for their TOP museums. Of course Rome is loaded also w/ top museums and IMO warrants more than a weeks stay.
I agree with JS about Florence - even 2 weeks isn't enough time to see everything, but a week is a great amount of time to spend there. I know you said you're interested in art museums, but don't forget that many churches have art in context, as opposed to in a sterile museum setting. Santa Croce in Florence has many chapels painted by many different artists, including Giotto, and attached to the church is the Pazzi Chapel designed by Brunelleschi. San Lorenzo has some of Michelangelo's sculptures commissioned by the Medici. You might want to stop in Padua, which has Donatello's equestrian statue "Gattamelatta" as well as the Scrovegni Chapel with frescoes painted by Giotto.
I have made many wonderful study trips to Italy and of course Florence would otherwise be anyone's first choice. This time I am going to pause at a few highlights I have missed. I believe that Genoa is very important for its architecture which however must be discovered! So one needs several days.
Thanks all for your suggestions! Probably I will settle for Milan to Parma and onward.
