Hi David,

There are no tolls on the highways in Austria. What you do is buy a "Vignette", which is a "toll sticker" you place on the windshield. It costs about 8 Euro for a Vignette sticker that's good for 10 days of highway use. You can buy them at gas stations, convenience stores, etc. in Austria and in Germany by the Austrian border. You'll see signs for them. Best to buy it before entering Austria just to be safe.

Switzerland works tolls the same way except... The Swiss autobahn system requires the purchase of a vignette (toll sticker) which is offered only as an annual toll sticker, which costs 40 Swiss francs.

Hi David,

You will find tolls on "scenic" or "tunnel" roads. It's not the norm. In Austria, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse (part of B107) is a toll road. On the B108 (Matrei in Osttirol) has the Felbertauren Tunnel which has a toll. The Brenner Pass (Europa Bridge) has a toll going from Austria into Italy.

The Vignette is the "toll" for highway use. There are some "special" roads, as the ones I noted, that do collect a toll in addition to the Vignette.

We use cash to pay the tols on roads such as these. All have attendents at a booth to collect the toll.
