toll booths in Italy

I am planning on renting a car and driving in the Tuscany area for a week at the end of June. I heard that there are a lot of expensive toll booths, is this true?

Not really. The only toll roads are the Austostrada and they mainly do the high traffic routes (Rome to Florence for example). Around most of Tuscany you won't use them, we used Autostradas once during our weeklong stay in Tuscany last year. It costs all of about 5 euros or so per hour of driving at normal speeds, so even then it's not a big cost (tolls are based on distance traveled).

Lisa,

David is correct. You'll only see tolls on the autostrada - You're biggest expense (after rental car insurance) will probably be gasoline.

Currently this week in Rome, it's about €1.47 per liter which comes to about $8.69 a gallon... get the smallest, most fuel efficient car you (and your luggage) can fit into because prices are going up!
