Tirano to Milan via train - question

Hello, From reading various posts, I see that a train reservation is not needed or perhaps not even possible to travel from Tirano to Milan. I have seen people referring others to the regional train system. But still there are a few things with which I could use some help: 1. I have seen varying travel times ranging from 2 hours to 4 hours Is that true? Perhaps based on number of stops? 2. Is the regional train system , the Trenitalia the only train? 3. I try to find timetables on the Trenitalia website but only find the function for buying a ticket and cannot seem to get a time or price. Any suggestions or even alternatives such as buses with advantages or disadvantages will be appreciated. Thank you! 2.

Hi Paula. There is a train, but because of an odd fluke in computer systems, it is not easy to find. It leaves Tirano at 7:10am and every two hours 9:10, 11:10, etc. until 7:10 pm and takes 2 and 1/2 hours to Milan. The fare is 11 euros; there are no reservations and no discounts, so just buy tix when convenient in Italy. Enjoy your trip!

When you are looking for train times anywhere in Europe your best ally is the DBahn website. With it you can find 'most any train anywhere. Once you have found your trains, and stops, and changing places, you can use the national rail website for the fares and tickets. This information is in the two "sticky" posts at the top of the sektion list of threads. Click on them and you will find much more excellent hints and help. Thanks to Kent, who started the stickies.

The usually infallible German Rail site only shows a very long roundabout route for Tirano-Milano with multiple connections. The Trenitalia site doesn't show any route at all. The Swiss Rail site shows the times given by Bob with a fare of 12 CHF (about €10). The German Rail site also doesn't show Varenna-Esino and other stations along the east side of Lake Como that are served by Trenitalia and do appear on the Trenitalia site.

www.trenord.it/ This is the website for Trenord, large private railway runs commuter and regional trains from Milan to the north (including Tirano). They also operate the Malpensa Express trains to the airport. They run out of Cadorna Station in Milan which is closer to the center than Centrale, cleaner, better organized, and handier to the Metro.

The Trenord site lists the same times as the Swiss Rail site and shows all trains from Tirano to Milano arriving at Milano Centrale.

Final answer: go to FSItaliane.it ( or use the Home FS button at upper left on the Trenitalia Website). You will get a website that is more reliable. It shows the schedule and prices for Tirano to Milano Centrale. Trains depart every two hours at ten minutes after, as reported above from the Swiss site. Travel time is 2.5 hours and the cost is 11,05 euro.

I am curious why Bahn.de doesn't show that train. Anybody know?

My appreciation to each of you for your suggestions. I will try visiting the sites which are suggested. And your responses at least have informed me that I have been grappling with a bit of a puzzling situation. Glad to have some specific time frames to the frequency of train runs as there is a deadline to be met when going into Milan. Again, my thanks and happy trails to you.... Paula
