Tips on Weight of Carryon

I had a quick question. My wife and I will be traveling from NYC to London, from London to Thailand and from Thailand to Hong Kong, finally back to NYC. I am a little concerned about the weight limits for carryons. I am thinking about purchasing the Rick Steves Convertible Carryon and am wondering if anybody knows about how much it weighs fully loaded? I know this differs with different people but just looking for a general idea.

The restrictions are 15 pounds on some airlines we are flying like Thai Airways and Virgin Atlantic. It seems extremely low and I don't know if it is enforced or not but I want to be prepared. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. I guess we will just plan to check our bags and use our daypack to bring aboard our laptop, camera, and video camera.

How much it weighs fully loaded? It weighs 3 lbs empty and measures 9" x 21" x 14". I don't think anyone here can tell you what yours will weigh fully loaded, because that depends on what you put in it: beverages (heavy), books (heavy), a netbook (just 2 pounds these days), or mostly lighter items?

In general, the bag is big enough that, if you really have it fully loaded, it would be easy to exceed 15 pounds.

I once weighed my RS convertible bag (but didn't check it) at the check-in station near the Fernbahnhof at FRA. I had picked up two resort brochures (glossy, magazine style, thick) and a book while I was in Germany, and it weighed 26#. I'd guess that the last time I used it, only partially full, it weighed around 16#. I do carry a battery and charger for my camera, but other than that, it's mostly clothes (no shoes). (I learned to shave with a disposable razor to save the 1# weight of my rechargeable.)

BTW, the Outdoor Products Essential Carry-on, available from Campmor.com, is only slightly smaller than the RS Convertible bag and weighs 3/4# less.

This was a good question with a good "disclaimer" - Doug said he was:

"... wondering if anybody knows about how much it weighs fully loaded? I know this differs with different people but just looking for a general idea."

I would like to thank Lee for apparently reading the entire question through before answering. I mean no disrespect to Kent and Steve, who are very knowledgeable, but I cringe when answers like theirs are posted. Doug was just looking for a general idea. I don't think he needed to be reminded that books, beverages and bricks are heavier than cotton balls.

Ditto with Linda. Snarky comments here just aren't helpful. Legitimate question from Doug.
