Tips for flying with scoliosis: cushions, supports, etc

I have mild thoracic (shoulder blade area) scoliosis, and when traveling, via plane or car, I get CRAZY pain from soft-tissue inflammation. I'm wondering if anyone with scoliosis, or back pain during travel in general, can recommend a cushion, pillow, etc.

I have tried tempurpedic full back support, but after an hour, the material gets hot, mushy, and basically unsupportive. My perfect scenario would be something like a 2-3" thick latex mat that would extend the length of my back (shoulders down to lower back). Latex is responsive, and doesn't "mush" like memory foam once it gets hot, and latex stays cool as well (less back sweat!)

I have found an inflatable "1st Class Sleeper" device that allows you to basically make a back support for your entire back (think large airbag-type support). http://www.amazon.com/Travelon-Class-Sleeper-Navy-Size/dp/B003BGEVUK/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A269N201SWOEB6

Would love suggestions!

$24 is a small investment in your comfort. Order one and try it out at home first.

My wife has had back surgery for spinal stenosis. She gets relief the hard way when traveling--Morphine Sulfate.

Hi Stephen. My sister has scoliosis and we traveled to Paris together so I hope I can help.

Do you need support when you're sitting, lying down, or both? It sounds like you've found a solution with the latex mat - does such a thing exist? Are you concerned about the size it would take up if you travel with it? If it exists, take it! My sister thought about bringing an entire mattress pad on our trip - she was worried about the beds being too hard and uncomfortable. In the end, she didn't bring it and had no problems on the plane or in hotels.

Have you talked to your orthopedist about your needs? Maybe he/she can recommend something.

My other suggestion is, once you think you've found something, try it out before you travel.

David:

Agreed, i will buy the inflatable cushion and try and home. Travelers united in pain; this next trip I"m taking will see me using pain killers as well. Hoping for minimal pain, and the best for you and your partner during your travels.

Sarah:

I haven't found such a latex back rest/support, but I've actually thought about buying a cheap latex bed topper, and literally cutting enough to provide back support. I'm okay if I have a good bed, and a massage once on the ground at my destination. However, the lack of support in the airplane seat is what provides the most pain; as noted in the message to david, a combination of pain killers and support is what I"ll try.
