Recovering from spine surgery and have asked for a wheelchair in Boston. Not sure what to tip? What about in Amsterdam? Flying Delta.
It would be interesting to hear from one of the Dutch locals on this one, but from my understanding I wouldn't tip for the wheelchair assistance in Amsterdam.
Here's a post from the NY Times about tipping for the service in the USA: http://intransit.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/how-much-to-tip-for-wheelchair-assistance-in-airports/
Hi,
We always tip $5 for the person helping. More if they help more. One got us on a golf cart with our luggage to go through Munich airport, which is a very long airport. Do what you feel is best. I know we don't have to, we just choose to.
In the Netherlands it is highly unusual to tip the persons assisting you, and might even be regarded as somewhat degrading. They are after all professionals doing their job. Well-meant thanks will be much appreciated though.
When needed in the past in the US, we tipped $5. Unlike the Netherlands, these contractors depend on tips.
A few years ago it was necessary to use the wheelchair assistant at Heathrow. We tipped the man 5 GBP which he accepted without seeming to be offended or surprised. I was extremely grateful for his service, I can tell you.
