Time to see some of Amsterdam during flight connection?

We will be connecting flights in Amsterdam between the United States and Central Europe. Is a little more than 4 hours really enough time to fit in a tour of Amsterdam as the Schiphol airport website suggests?

How does customs, passports, and security figure into this? In Rick Steves fashion, we only plan to have carry-on luggage. I suppose we can put the luggage in a locker for a few hours. Do either passport checks or luggage security screens happen during international transfers in Schiphol no matter if one leaves the airport or not, or only when leaving the airport?

Thank you.

I can't imagine that you'd have time to do anything. Just get some lunch/dinner or you could see the museum that is in Schiphol. Or go shopping at some of the airport stores. The last time I flew through Schiphol, I had to be at the gate very early because we were bussed from the gate to the plane. I think that I went through customs both when I landed in Amsterdam and when I was flying home, but I don't know what the rules are.

I suppose with four hours you have just enough time to take the train to Centraal Station and walk around a bit...but that's about it. I would just stay in the airport, with such a short amount of time it's not worth the hassle. If the country you're connecting to is a "Schengen" country, you will have to pass through an immigration check on the way to your gate. All transfer passengers coming from transatlantic flights have to go through a security screening, no matter what their final destination is.

Schilpol is a fast, and efficient airport. Trains depart from baggage claim every few minutes, and you're in the heart of Amsterdam in 15 mins. If everything's on time. (Big If. lol) I think you'd be ok.

Not worth the anxiety involved. Relax in the airport and people watch!

Our family of four was in Schiphol last summer. We came in on easyJet, it took 15 minutes to taxi to the gate, and more than 15 minutes to walk from the gate to the train station in the airport, it is quite large. It took less time, once we were on the train, to get to Central Amsterdam and take the tram to our hotel. Four hours, stay at the airport.
