Hi, Looking ot buy airline tickets (Lufthansa) from NY/NJ to Florence, Italy with layover in Frankfurt. Does 2 hours sound like a reasonable amount of time for the layover in Frankfurt? Wondering if it's too short.
I think if both legs of the flight are booked through Lufthansa, they will expect you to make the connection. I made a 1 hr connection through FRA on Lufthansa from Concourse A to Concourse B. If for some reason (delayed transatlantic flight) you miss the connection, Lufthansa has a lot of flights to Florence. They'll take care of you.
FRA is big, efficient but big. Switching terminals takes time so I agree if you are on Lufthansa you're fine, otherwise be aware of the terminal for each airline. I had a four hour cushion and had no trouble this summer, but I did not have to clear customs. Best of luck!
I had a connecting flight thru Frankfurt from Boston last summer. We landed at 05:30 am. There were long lines to get thru immigration/passport control - it was also a long distance from the international arrivals area to where we got our connecting flight. It took us almost two hours to get to the connecting gate. Remember, we were one plane of 400+ and other int'l flights were arriving at that time too. It may not take that long usually, but after that experience, I'd not want a layover of less than 3 hours. But that's just me, and my mother is 82, so she can't be rushed too much. I don't mind finding coffee and a pastry in the sirport and poeple watching gor a while.
Lufthansa uses Terminal 1 mainly. Though if you should arrive in Terminal 2, it takes all of 5 min. to get to Terminal 1 using the Sky Train monorail. 2 hours sounds like plenty of time.
We made a 1 hour connection there last summer, with 2 kids in tow. You'll have to go through a security check, also, when going to your gate in FRA. It's Lufthansa's hub, so they'll have lots of flights if you miss yours.
Thanks everyone. Looks like enough time as the flight arrives and departs from the same terminal.
Two hours for a change at Frankfurt should generally be fine if your entire ticket is on Lufthansa. If you need to check in with a different airline for the 2nd leg, then it will be tight at best.
With arrival in Terminal 1 and departure from Terminal 1, Paul has plenty of time. Even if it was a different Terminal, he would still have time. Having managed a hotel here in Frankfurt for 3 years, with a shuttle driver that went to the airport to pick up guests on a daily basis, I can tell you that the average time it takes to emerge into the main airport area after landing is 30 min. With an inter Europe flight, recommended time to get to the airport is 1.5 hours before the flight. Considering they will be already be in the correct terminal, already have boarding passes and luggage checked through, there is really more than enough time.
