I'm buying tickets from trenitalia. How do self service ticket options work? How long would it take to ship the tickets to my home?
Same question for the Swiss train site.

They do not ship. Either print them out on your computer or pick up at a ticket office.

For SBB, you do not want them shipped; it is very expensive. Just get the confirmation code and pick up the tickets when you arrive in Switzerland. Note that this option does not work well for people who want to use a pre-purchased ticket for travel INTO Switzerland as the ticket must be picked up in Switzerland.

We took our trenitalia confirmation to the ticket window and picked up our tickets. I would have tried their kiosk, but we don't have a chip&pin credit card and our time was tight. I did see another American use the kiosk and he didn't seem to have any problem.

Your American credit card will work in the Italian ticket machines; look at the following page (Ron in Rome) for tons of information! Towards the top of his tutorial, you'll see a ticket machine screen that you'll use to pick up your tickets. http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/buying-train-tickets-updated
