Three days in Frankfurt

We - 4 adults - will arrive in Frankfurt on 11 June 2010. We would like to visit Rothenberg and /or Bamberg, amongst other. We anticipate seeing Franfurt on day one but are open for suggestions as to where to go to on the Saturday and Sunday. Is it possible to go to Rothenberg by train and return on the same day? Cheapest way to do so? Any guidance is appreciated.

There's one person, regularly on this forum, who lives in Frankfurt--she can help with sights to see in Frankfurt.

And Lee is our German travel guru.

I'll bet (how do I know that?) you'll hear from both of them.

I think Jo just did this a few months ago (actually only Frankfurt to Würzburg RT) using a Gruppentageskarte (€23,60) for the Frankfurt metro (RMV) to Kahl am Main and back and a Bayern-Ticket (€28) from Kahl to Würzburg, but it would work the same to Rothenburg, just a little longer.

Get schedules from the German Rail website.

One thing to consider, it takes about 3½ hrs each way to Rothenburg, so it will be a long day with a lot of travel. Rothenburg is a nice place to spend a night.

Also, Bayern-Tickets are limited on workdays to travel after 9 AM. If you go on Sunday, no problem. If you go on Monday, you can't leave Kahl (on the way to Würzburg) until after 9.

Just did this trip again this past week. Oddly enough, Kahl is not on the RMV ticket machine, so I have been using Seligenstadt. The train to Würzburg leaves Frankfurt at 08:34, and by the time you are in Bavaria, it is 09:00, so that works out well. It is a direct train, but takes 1 hour, 50 min. If you are going on the weekend, then you could use the Schöne Wochenende ticket and leave earlier.

Also went up the Rhein last week too as a day trip, again leaving Frankfurt around 08:30 and by the time we were in Mainz, it was 9 and the Rhineland Pfalz ticket was then valid. Marksburg was great and the town of Braubach is lovely. It is nice riding the train up and down each side of the river as the view is quite different.

You could go up to Bad Homburg to Hessen Park, a great Open Air museum or the Saalburg, a reconstructed Roman fort as well as the schloss from Kaiser Wilhem. Or down to Heidelberg. Do leave enough time for Frankfurt as many people find that one day is usually not enough, since there is so much to see there.

Actually, either the Schönes-Wochenende- or the Bayern-Ticket allow you to start before 9 on weekends, but the difference between the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket and the Bayern-Tickets is less than the cost of the Gruppentageskarte, so, you're right, Jo, on a weekend, the S-W-T would be the way to go.
