My partner and I are going to be in Switzerland and Italy from July 1-26. Our plan is to be in Switzerland for 20 of the days and Italy for 6; we will most likely buy the one month Swiss Saver pass (we've done this before and like the convenience). The question is: on the first and last legs of the journey, which are "Zurich to The Cinque Terre" and then "Florence to Zurich," how will we make reservations for the full trip, taking into account that the Switzerland part of the trips will always be covered by our rail pass?
Wait until you arrive in Switzerland to get those tickets. Just go to any rail station tell them you have a pass and you the will give you a ticket that just covers the journey through Italy. Same procedure for when you are in Italy.
you could get an additional Swiss/Italy Flex pass (3days?) if that covers your in/out boarder crossing days - but you need to calculate the cost savings if any. just deivide the pass cost by the number of travel days - and if most of the tickets cost more than a pass - you can save money. Or else wait and buy locally - asking for specials as the other poster mentioned,.
