I know most folks here who travel by train in Europe are comfortable with 2nd class travel and that is what I usually use. I recently booked a trip from Amsterdam to Paris on a weekend and Thalys has a "weekend" rate for comfort 1 class that is much cheaper than the regular fare. For 2 passengers, we are traveling in comfort 1 for 118 euros. The lowest fare on the same train for comfort 2 was 100 euros. For most trains that I saw for the same travel date, the comfort 2 fare was 70 euros (for 2 people) so the margin was different for comfort 1 and it may not be worth the upgrade. Just something to consider in case you are planning this trip.
