We'll be taking the Thalys next week from Paris Nord to Brussels with luggage. Has anyone done this recently? How early should we plan on arriving at the train station for a 10:15 a.m. train on a Friday morning?
I haven't done it since they've started doing the security checks, sorry. Does the Thalys website give any indication?
I took the Thalys from Paris Nord to Amsterdam about a month ago. The whole process was a bit disorganized. No one knew where to line up. The scanners are on the platforms next to the engines. I think they didn't start processing people until about 1/2 an hour before we were due to leave. It was pretty basic. Throw your stuff on the conveyor and step through the scanner. I would think if you were there by 0945, you'd have plenty of time.
Yes, half and hour is the minimum for Thalys. Similar on return. It could take longer for a trip from London, because then, immigration formalities are needed as well.
Tim, London to Paris is not Thalys, the company in this case is Eurostar. For London to Paris (or vice versa), both emigration and immigration are done at the departure station before boarding the train. So you are legally in France whilst still at St Pancras station. Eurostar have a minimum time of 30 minutes for this procedure, but I would recommend 45.
Chris, thanks for you additional comment. While you are of course perfectly correct, I was trying to anticipate the large number of tourists who treat all train trips as similar. (If I were going to quibble, I could argue that I didn't say that the trip from London was on Thalys. But I'm not going to take that route.) I have taken the train between Brussels and Paris and also between London and Brussels. The actual name is not the real subject of this thread. The security time is the subject.
Thank you for your input.
Our tickets say to be at the platform at least two minutes before departure. A December 2015 Thalys press release says, twenty minutes before departure. Hence, I wanted to hear from people who have taken the Thalys from Paris Nord recently, at least since the terrorist attack in Brussels in March.
We will plan to be at the train station no later than 9:30 a.m. for the 10:15 departure.
Just one more clarification. You won't know where to line up because,as you probably know, they don't post the track number until about 45 minutes before the train is due to leave. You can try and guess and hover in that area, but don't stress yourself out. The train will arrive, passengers will detrain, the train will be searched and secured, and then they will allow passengers to clear security and board. There is no secure waiting area.
I read Tim's comment the same way, I think because of the phrase saying that it "could" take longer. When the fact is we know that it does take longer, because Eurostar itself has the 30-minute check-in rule. I wouldn't jump on Chris for his interpretation, which is also how I read it.
In any event, Kateja has been able to provide the on-the-ground recent perspective that you were seeking, Just Travel. It's great that she's given you some idea of what to expect (although unfortunately, the scenario sounds a bit unsettled, but it's always better to have an idea of that beforehand).
