Rail Europe site refers me to a call center when I try to book a couple of tickets on TGV from CDG to Avignon, in early May. Believe I'd be most comfortable having a reservation prior to arrival at CDG, rather than hoping there is space available. Any one with info on this situation? Thanks.
I hope someone else chimes in here since I have only made reservations and not used them yet. My advice is to not use Rail Europe. Go to http://www.tgv-europe.com/en/train-ticket. The first Google option is an ad that includes Rail Europe. To avoid confusion, pick the 2nd one called Train ticket for other countries. That should take you to a form to fill out for tickets. Fill out all the sections. In the last box where it asks about your ticket collection country, put Great Britain. When you click on Search, you should get some options for times and ticket prices. Choose your option, pay with your CC and you should get a link to print your electronic ticket confirmation as well as an email about it. Unfortunately, it may be too late to get the very cheapest tickets. They go on sale 3 months ahead of the date of travel. But you should be able to get a confirmed seat and a reasonable price this way. If you are concerned about arriving late you can choose a ticket that can be changed. If not, you can get the best price possible by paying in advance online.
"arriving May 9 at 8:30 AM" That's assuming that your plane is on-time. Most are but occasionally, they can be late. Then you have immigration to go through. Next, you can taxi into the correct train station (at least 1hr and 50E) or take the RER Metro B and possibly change trains to get to the correct train station. I see that Tim has checked in. He'll have the best information on getting to the correct station (there are six train stations in Paris) via the metro.
What's your travel date and when is your flight scheduled to arrive at CDG?
arriving May 9 at 8:30 AM. Allowance for customs and baggage, made the 11:40 departure look easy. Any idea why I can't get the site to allow a ticket purchase?
Unless your plane is super late, you'll have plenty of time to catch the direct 11:40 TGV from CDG to Avignon. In fact, you probably could catch the 11:07 TGV. Don't book on the Rail Europe site. Instead, book on tgv-europe.com. To keep from being bumped to the US Rail Europe site, choose Great Britain as your country of residence. Then to avoid being bumped to the UK Rail Europe site, choose to stick with tgv-europe and choose France as your ticket retrieval country. If you book today, you still can get a discount fare. You will be able either to print your own ticket or to pick it up at the TGV station at CDG.
Tim, thanks, that info was helpful. I understand that TGV ticket will be honored on preceding and following train, for the date and destination of original purchase. Know if that is correct?
Rhonda, I gave you very misleading information on the 11:07 train! It departs from Gare de Lyon in Paris, not from CDG. Even if your plane were to arrive early, you shouldn't plan on going into Paris to catch that train. Stick to your plan to book the 11:40 TGV that goes directly from CDG to Avignon. You can exchange or get a refund on full fare tickets at no charge up until two hours after the time of departure. More restrictions apply to Loisir fare tickets.
Tim, just booked both tickets through tgv-europe.com. Took awhile, but it's done and the 11:40 it is. Many thanks. Au revoir.
Hello all - I also want to purchase rail tickets from CDG to Avignon and it gives 3 train choices at 11:40 - the TGV Duplex 5164 and 2 for Brussels Provence - they all leave at exactly the same time. I'm thinking that they might all be different cars on the same train and the Brussels Provence is less expensive for Comfort by $60 - is that because it is a much less nice train or ?
Since the trains are TGVs, I expect that the difference in fares is due to one train having more discount fare seats available as of today.
