The cheapest and most convenient way to obtain Euros is at an ATM with a debit card in Italy - bar none !!! The taxi is a fixed price of 48E within the old wall city of Rome. Without looking at a map I assume your hotel would be within the city walls. Some just prefer the idea of having a "driver" meet them at the airport. Taxis are fine as is the train.

There are ATMs in the airport. Just avoid places like Travelex which have higher conversion fees. Regular Bancomats are just fine. You will need cash for the taxi and Frank is correct on the fare. It's set by the authorities.

As Frank and Larry said, get cash from bank ATMs. Be sure to notify your debit card and credit card providers when you will be in Europe or a computer may block your cards for suspected fraudulent use. Read this helpful article by Rick Steves.

Consider a private car service. After a long tireing flight, possibly being jet lagged, and not knowing the lay of the land, it is wonderful to have driver meet you in the terminal with a sign waiting for you. It only cost about 10 euro more than the regular taxis and is well worth it. We have use romecabs.com a number of time and were well pleased. Check out their web site and see what you think. Euros are cheaper at an ATM in Italy, but I always like to have some euros on hand when we land -- airport ATMs don't always work. TC
