Bonjour! I'm travelling to Paris and visiting Chateau Versailles on Sun 13 October 13 with my 82 year old parents. I'm considering catching a Taxi from central Paris to make the day easier on my parents - conserve their energy for the Chateau! Can anyone tell me how easy this will be? Do the Paris taxi's travel to Versailles? Do I need to book them? Is it easy to catch a taxi from the palace back to central Paris?
Your help would be greatly appreciated :)
I'm not aware of any reason why you can't get a taxi there and back. You shouldn't need to book one, though your hotel (if staying at one) could call one for you rather than having to hail it randomly. FYI - There are trams that go through the gardens and out to the Trianons and Hamlet. The gardens are huge and they require extensive walking so be sure to take advantage of the transport options available.
Thank you very much for your reply. We will be staying in an apartment in the Marais district and I was concerned about the ease of catching the train. I understand there are a lot of stairs to negotiate. I'll now endeavour to obtain a quote for a return taxi.
Thanks so much for your help.
Susan, Taking a Taxi from Paris to Versailles will likely be a somewhat expensive venture. The trip is about 35 minutes via RER, and travel by Taxi will take longer and will be subject to traffic. Even with a Paris Museum Pass, you should prepare for the possibility of having to stand in a queue for access to the Chateau. Having a couple of those small folding chairs might make it easier for your parents. There are places to sit inside, but the folding chairs may be useful at times there also. If you're planning to visit the Gardens, I'm not sure which of the facilities there will be operating in October. There is Le Petit Train which takes visitors from the Chateau to the lake and then back. However, I also noticed some people riding in electric golf carts that seat four, so I'm assuming they can be rented. You'd have to ask the staff. I'd highly recommend using some form of transport for the gardens, as they're extensive and wandering around on foot can be exhausting! Happy travels!
Whoa there , the taxi idea is not going to work, not the Taxi Parisien, they are not going to serve other towns,, and Versailles is another town . They also will not drive all the way out there and wait for hours and they will not want to waste even the time to drive back empty, in bad traffic the drive can take an hour... so do not count on a regular taxi.
You can look at small van tours run by Parisvision or Paris Tourisme, they are the priciest option but they will pick you up at your hotel and group is smaller , 6-10 folks at most. You could take the train, and there is a bus that runs to the palace.. The palace itself will involve alot of walking , but you can rent a golf cart to tour the gardens and I do recomend that.. the grounds are massive A private guide would also be great, but VERY pricey, hundreds of euros.
When I lived in the suburbs, we took taxis home once in a while. The fare meter changes when you pass out of the city, turning faster, but Paris cabs will drive to nearby towns.
When I lived in Versailles, albeit many years ago, friends would sometimes take taxis home when it was late. It won't wait for them while they tour, and it will be expensive, but if their hotel calls to arrange a taxi to Versailles, I don't see any issues.
