need the latest info. Are there any taxi stands at St. Peters Sq Vatican City. Have heard several different reports
18 months ago, I used the one on Via della Traspontina, which was a new, recently-moved location at that time, further from St. Peter's than the old one (This one is not marked on Rick's maps, however.) Google Maps also shows one south of the square at Via della Fornaci. There is also one in front of the Vatican Museum, but that's a longer walk from St. Peter's Square.
Other cabs hang out in the area, but wanted to quote me a flat fee, rather than use the meter. For fares using the meter, they directed me to the actual taxi stand. (In this case, the flat fares quoted were not especially high, perhaps 20 euros and I ended up spending 17 or 18 by meter to my destination in Testaccio.)
Best thing anyone in Rome can do for their pocketbook Is learn how to use the bus and metro system there. Sometimes the bus runs 3-4 blocks away (as near the Pantheon), but they're a fast and efficient way to get around that great city.
jw,
I've found taxis to be readily available near St. Peter's but not all of them are "official" taxis. On one occasion I was quoted an outrageous price for a fairly short trip. I told the driver to forget it as his rates were too expensive and started to walk away. I had only walked a few steps when another driver approached me and offered a much more reasonable rate, which I accepted.
