Taxi's in Paris

We intend on using the metro, RER and possibly bus during our stay but in the evening we would prefer a taxi. We are staying the Latin Quarter but want to go to dinner just off Rue Cler on one of our nights. Are taxis' expensive??

Compared to other cities in the world, Paris taxis aren't bad.

"Standing out on the street trying to find a taxi" would really be a problem as anyone who has actually tried it should know.

Taxi stands are located at nearly every metro station and major square in central Paris. Moving empty taxis may not pick up a fare within 50 meteres of the stands.

Why play dodge-em looking for a cab that can't stop when you can walk a hundred yards and hop in one and be on you way?

Somebody's up to his old trick of slipping in an edit to display expertise. Unfortunately the edit's not quite right.

I'd bet that driving from the Latin Quarter (vic Sorbonne) to Rue Cler is a bit over four kilometers; in any case six kilometers is certainly not 'less than three miles', it's more like three and three quarters. Taxis round the mileage up to the next full number.

Here's how the Paris taxis work:

1 -- If you call for a cab, the meter starts running when the taxi leaves where ever it was to come get you. I have no idea if there's an additional fee for phone dispatch, but I doubt it since most calls are made to the nearest taxi stand (assuming the person making the calls knows where to call).

2 -- Basic night charge is at tad over two euros, plus a tad over one euro per kilometer.

I have no idea what a taxifarecalculator is, but the tariff shouldn't be over nine euros.

You've taxi stands right nearby: there's one at St Michel and another at Maubert. I can't picture one at either Cluny or Lux Gardens, but there might be.

I'd ride the metro, which I strongly suspect you will once you become used to it. Keep in mind that it starts shutting down around eleven-thirty or so on week nights, maybe a bit later, that's my own fudge factor.

On second thought, what I'd really do is walk. You can stroll the whole distance along the river in about an hour and the scenery is terrific.

If you need a cab in Paris, don't walk around looking for one. Instead, look for the nearest Taxi rank...metro stations, hotels--as there are about 500 of them in Paris.

Shelly,, I would consider the metro,, I am a woman who visits alone and find the metro in that area very safe in evenings,, mind you I am in before 11 or so normally.

Taxis are not much different then here price wise,, but they seem harder to get,, a taxi stand is best bet,, but I still find them hard to get.

Steve, you're giving the wrong impression when you say "Safer than standing out on the street trying to find a taxi." Paris is very, very safe.

I agree with Pat, the metro is extremely safe, we take it often even after 11 pm.

I've always found it difficult to get a taxi in Paris.

I'm with Ed and John on this---it's a nice walk. We found walking along the Seine in the evening one of the greatest pleasures of Paris. You could walk there and taxi back.

There is a taxi stand just couple of blocks east of Rue Cler, towards Invalides. It is probably associated with the Metro stop there (Latour Maubourg). I'm sure there are others west of rue Cler, toward the Eiffel Tower.
