Taxi Prices in Paris

I just returned from a five day trip to Paris (late May 2014) and was stunned to discover that the Taxi ride from CDG into central Paris was far more than any guidebook or even the helpful steward on the airplane indicated. Everything I read or heard, said to expect about 40-50 Euro for a one way ride. In reality is was over 70 Euro -- each way. And, interestingly, it took us far less time on our return trip (40 min vs. 1 hour), but the price was virtually the same. Perhaps this should be made more clear in Rick Steves' -- also the cabbies only accepted cash -- something they did not tell us upfront. So bring lots of Euro if you expect to take a cab in Paris. Rick is wrong -- they are NOT an affordable form of transportation. I live in Norway -- one of the most expensive countries in the world-- and a cab ride of the same distance would have only cost $30-40 US dollars...

I'm going back to Paris in a few weeks and would love to know if anyone has any tips on how to get cheaper cab rides. (By the way, we did use the Metro and RER, but from our hotel and at the hours we traveled, cabs were are only/best option)

Cabs within the city center are usually in the affordable category. For instance, I paid under 8 euros each way (at night) between Rue Cler and Jardin de Luxembourg. Thanks for the 70 euro detail on your airport rides. Although I think we used to quote 50 euros, the rate I currently see from CDG to city center is 65 euros + 1 per bag, or more if there's traffic (p. 229 of the France book or p. 554 of Paris).

Another data point- we paid 50 euro this morning from the Montmarte neighborhood (so on the north side of central Paris stop and go traffic that drives fares up) to CDG. Had the hotel front desk call for the cab and confirm they'd take a MasterCard with magnetic strip for payment beforehand and that worked out acceptably. Tipped the driver 5 euros in cash in addition.

Over the years we've often paid between 60-70 euros depending on the time of day, etc. I've wondered how others got cabs for 40-50 to CDG.

Tami,

I just returned from Paris and found an alternative to the high price of taxis from CDG into the 11th Arrondisement...Super Shuttle. I had looked at the various posts on the Travel Forum by fellow travelers, and it was mentioned that shuttles were unreliable. That was a concern for me since the departing flight I was taking was back home. I got the SuperShuttle in the CHG Airport and contacted them a few days later to reserve my return to CHG by calling +33(0)811 70 78 12. You can also contact them at www.supershuttle.fr. I spoke with a representative who not only booked the return shuttle, but gave me information about the 11th Arrondisement because he lived very close to my apartment.

As a solo traveler, the cost 27 euros was much more reasonable than the 50 euro taxi fare. For those who have more than one traveler, any additional travelers, I think, is 16 euros more. Not only did I save money, but I had the opportunity to speak with an Iraqi women traveling for work (Shell Oil) and her male co-workers, and two Australian women on the return trip AND was taken directly under the Eiffel Tower (which I had missed). I was impressed by the return driver, Jay (sp?), because he took me on a mini-side trip on the way and gave me a lot of information about the parts of Paris we were driving through.

As you can see, they are top on my list. When returning to Paris, I will definitely take them again.

Tami, I have never paid less then 50-60 euros for the airport run, and time of day and traffic does affect price. 40 euros,,sounds completely unrealistic.

And where I live the airport is no more then a 25- 30 min drive and it would cost between 55-60 dollar's.,so I to me the 35-45 min drive from airport to Paris seems reasonable considering Paris is a world class destination!

See my post of today for CDG to Paris car service. We used Inter Service Prestige for both directions. 55 Euros each way for 4 of us. Door to door with a driver waiting for us at the terminal.
Phone numbers:0033(0)6 67 47 91 39 or 0033(0)6 98 25 40 41.
70 euros is a rip.
