Taxi or Uber in Florence and San gimignano

We want to take a taxi or Uber to San Gimignano from Florence and back. We do not want the train and bus. Can someone tell me how easy is it to get Uber or a taxi both places, please?

According to The Roman Guy website, Uber is limited to Rome and Milan. Perhaps you could consider a private driver? I’m sure others on the forum might have some suggestions.

I didn't think the train went to San Gimignano. I was thinking it goes to Certaldo 7 miles away on the way to Siena.

The roads in the area are crooked but well paved and easy to drive. They're not that busy and they're well marked. We rented a car and visited San Gimignano after all the tour buses had left. And it's also an easy drive to Volterra from there.

Note; Most people pick up buses across the street from the bus station to the right of McDonalds. Maybe a bus can get you there? It's an easier way to Siena than the train because the bus takes you all the way into the center city.

This private driver service has seen multiple recommendations on the forum:

Out of curiosity, I did a dummy estimate for Florence >San Gimignano, random date, and came up with €294 one way. You can request a custom route if needing a round trip. We are hearing that private drivers have become quite expensive due to fuel prices.

No Uber in Florence.

Uber is NOT the universal.

Are you staying at a hotel in Florence? Could always as the front desk staff to arrange a private driver. Pretty sure a taxi driver would be appreciative of the ride and fare. I’d negotiate the roundtrip fare before you got in the taxi.

Not sure why you don’t wish to take a bus. Nearly the same transit time if you went with a private driver.

If you want to see Siena and Pisa too - WalkAboutFlorence has a great DayTrip called BEST OF TUSCANY that takes you to all 3 places and a nice lunch at a winery.

I was in Certaldo and I could see san Gimignano so I decided to go. Train and then bus to the top of the hilltop of San gimignano.
I went on a Sunday, the buses were less frequent .
The very small town was lovely but packed with visitors. This was several years ago,it's possible that it's even more crowded now.
If I were to visit again I would arrive late afternoon and spend a night.

A friend & I were in Florence 5 years ago, so this information may be outdated. At that time, taxis were plentiful and reasonably priced., as were the buses.
We took a taxi to the bus station. At the bus station, we bought bus tickets to San Gimignano. I think it was about an hour, & we had to transfer buses along the way.
On Italian buses, be sure to get your ticket stamped before you exit the bus. There are machines in the front of the buses and some buses also have machines near the back door. Other tourists clued us in, thankfully. We saw 2 people receive a fine of around $200 because no one told them they needed to get their tickets stamped. We didn't see them get on the bus or we would have told them to stamp their tickets.

We could not buy return tickets until we were in San Gimignano. Those were purchased at the "tobacci" - a tiny smoke shop/convenience store. Back in Florence, we took a city bus to meet friends for dinner. While we waited for the local bus, we discovered a church across from the bus station. We were treated to a mini concert, as a visiting choir was rehearsing for a concert that evening. At the end of the evening, we took another taxi back to our airbnb.
Using public transportation was a little bit of a hassle, but it added so much to our travel experience!

We were in the San Gimignano and Certaldo area in July/August (family of 10) with 2 full size cars. The group would separate in hopes of using taxi service but we were never able to get a taxi in either place. We did get a taxi from Siena to villa outside of San G for 70 E. There is bus service from both train stations but it didn’t work for us time wise. I would prearrange any transportation you may need. This was recommended by TI for airport/Florence transfers https://www.sangimignano.com/en/shopping-at-the/car-rental/bellini-bruno/ but we did not utilize.
