Which is the best app to use to get taxi service in Rome?

Uber, Lyft, and other ride share apps do not really work, only licensed cabs and drivers are allowed to operate in most of Italy. Uber exists as Uber Black, private car service, if you have an account already, that would be an option.
Otherwise FreeNow and ItTaxi are used, you basically are reserving a city taxi for pickup.
All of the above will cost you more (due to a pick-up fee) than going to a taxi rank, which are usually not too far from where you might be. However, many like the apps, since the cost (at least an approximation) will be given for the ride.
Note: I should add that if you will be going to other cities in Italy, the preferred, or sometimes official, app will vary. Different in Florence than Rome, probably different in Naples.
