Our travel agent recommended getting a taxi from the Florence train station to San Gimignano because it would be cheaper than arranging a private car transfer. Will we (four people) have any problem with this? Is the time of day a factor? We were thinking of waiting until after dinner in Florence to travel to San Gimignano. Will this work?
Any other suggestions? We do not have a car.
I just love travel agents and their "private transfers". It just suggests to me that they don't know a whole lot about what they are telling you.
You can easily take the train from Florence to Poggibonsi and take the frequent local bus from the train station to San G. The bus is probably 1Euro and the train about 10Euro. Very inexpensive. And, very Italian. You will LOVE the experience.

However you decide to get there, it only makes sense to go to San Gimignano during the day when the sights and shops are open. Rememeber that most restaurants in Florence don't start serving dinner until 7:00pm or later, so taking any trip from Florence to see sights afterward isn't practical.
Thanks so much for the info on taking the train from Florence to the town near San Gimignano! I had not even considered that option.
