Is this really the best way to go? Have luggage and are middle-aged! How do we avoid being ripped off by taxi driver?
Call or email your hotel in Barcelona & ask them about transportation from the airport - if they recommend taxi then ask them what would be a reasonable fare.
If you have a lot of luggage and your hotel is nowhere near Las Ramblas, then yes, the taxi may be the best way to go. But it is going to be pricey. If you are staying near Las Ramblas and don't have too much luggage, you may want to look into the bus. It will take you to Placa Catalunya for about 5E. I had to take a taxi from my hotel to the airport before the bus was running and if I remember correctly, it was about 25E (last September). But I agree with the previous poster, calling your hotel for an estimate is a good idea if you decide you would prefer to take a taxi.
We used the Aerobus and it was easy and convenient. Drops you off at the top of Las Ramblas at Placa Catalunya. If you are staying in that area you can walk to your hotel. If not, hop on the metro at the Catalunya stop and ride to your lodging. Take the bus and save the 20 Euro for a big paella dinner.
Thanks very much to all that answered my question. Think we will take your advice and try the bus.
Isn't there a metro from the airport to Barcelona? Is this different than the Aerobus? I will be doing this next month.
The Barcelona metro doesn't go to the airport, but you can catch a RENFE train from the airport to a metro stop.
