Does anyone have a ballpark figure how much this route would cost? I'm debating whether I should taxi it to the hotel or reserve a shuttle service. I know shuttle will be cheaper, but if it's not that much different I'm willing to taxi it.

Depending upon traffic conditions, a taxi will cost €45-€60.
Air France bus #4 goes directly between CDG and Gare Montparnasse (one stop at Gare de Lyon). These are highway coaches so your bags go in the luggage bay. Service is every 30 minutes and the fare is €14.

Does anyone know if French taxi's work like American taxis. Is the price for the trip or per person?

I don't know about other cities in France, but in Paris the taxi fare is based on the length of the ride, the zones covered, and the time of day. The fare is the same for 1-3 people. There is a €2.60 charge for a fourth person. There is also a €0.90 charge for each piece of luggage weighing more than five kilos.
