Taking the train from Rome to Volterra- What's the best way?

I need details on which route to take and how much second class tickets would cost. Would we also need to take a bus to the town from the station? And if so, how long and how much would that be? Also about how long would the journey take from Rome? Thanks : )

stepahnie, The rail station in Volterra is called Volterra-Saline-Pomarance and you will have to take a Bus from there into town (about a 15-minute ride). The train ride from Rome varies depending on which train is chosen. One of the shortest trips is about 3H:50M, with two changes in Follonica and Cecina. If I could make a suggestion - you might find it VERY helpful to buy a copy of the Italy 2011 Guidebook (available now) at the earliest opportunity. There's a wealth of information there in getting to and from various places in Italy, and would help to answer some of the questions you've posted. Good luck with your planning!
