Taking rental car into different countries

Hello,

Going to several countries in Sept/Oct. Was looking at train travel, but some of the times are extremely long and we like to drive. Can anyone help with info on going between countries? Would be France into Spain (only to Santander and back), then back into France to Riviera, and then from the Riviera into Switzerland via either Italy or northward in France. Then lastly Switzerland into Germany - in Germany we want bascially all driving. Some of the train times were 3-4 hours longer than the drive. I haven't fully checked the rental car and gas prices and know they'll probably be a good bit higher than the train. Thanks, Linda

Have you tried pricing the rental on AutoEurope or other European car rental webite? Make sure you note on the site where you pick up the car and where you intend to drop it off. Drop off charges in a different country can be a bit steep. Next, use www.viamichelin.co.uk to estimate your driving miles, times and expenses. It's all presented to you.

It sounds like this will be a lengthy trip. If so, leasing a car may be a better deal than renting. See Renault Eurodrive and Peugeot Open Europe.

Like Tim said, I leased in A'dam and dropped off in Rome after a month. The price was a fraction of a rental car. For five of us, even the rental car was a bargain compared to trains (usually trains are cheaper for one or two and cars are cheaper for four or more). Leasing also included full CDW insurance in the price rather than as an additional cost.

The minimum is 17 days. If you will have a car that long, you should definitely check out leasing.

The countries you are traveling into should be no problem for rental/leased cars. Some companies don't want their cars going certain places, always let the company know where you plan to drive to make sure they don't have any restrictions. Many limit the car brands they will rent you if you are going into former Eastern block countries (because the theft rates can be high).

I've reserved a lease-back car from Auto France (www.autofrance.net) for my upcoming 28 day trip. Real good price with all insurance included and no restrictions on travel other than to Eastern
European countries. Definitely worth checking out. Happy travels!

Thanks, that's some great info to get me going. We have about 19 days, and it almost looks like we could really just use a train for the first 3 days(Paris to Nancy and then back to Paris). Thanks again.

Check with the rental company about taking it into Spain and Italy. Some of 'em don't like that.
