taking car rental from UK to Ireland

I know RS suggests leaving a rental car in UK and then rerent in Ireland but I have had an experience of the car not being ready when I arrived in Ireland and having to waste a night waiting on it. Therefore, I am looking at taking a rental car from the UKm across ferry, into Ireland. Anyibe ekse done this, and if so, car rental used, cost, convience, etc?

We looked into doing exactly this a few years ago and decided against it because the drop fee was huge - several hundred GBP's. It was far less expensive to hop between countries on Ryanair and re-rent.
