Take a motorcycle on the train?

I' heard that with special arrangements (and extra fees of course) you could take a motorcycle on many trains in Europe. My husband and I would like to travel and use our motorcycle. Advantages is that it would be cheaper (I think) than renting a motorcycle somewhere. Also, we have the motorcycle we're used to, etc.

Anyone have experience taking a motorcycle on a train? And I mean a motorcycle (1300) not a scooter.

Or am I better off just getting to my destination and renting? I've seen tours for motorcycles that include rentals but they're very expensive and since we live in Germany and already have a good motorcycle, just thought another option is worth checking out.

This is second hand info, but I according a coworker who looked into this, it's very difficult. You can only do this with freight trains, and the Motorcycle has to packed into a crate and all the gasoline has to be drained out, and the freight fees are very expensive. The only train where this wasn't a hassle was the Eurotunnel roll-on/roll-off service.

You bring a motorcycle (or a car) on one of the autotrains which exist in Europe. Most of the european Autotrain network originates in Germany, so I will post the link to German Autotrain: www.dbautozug.de The network covers Germany, Austria, Northern Italy and France.
