T3 to T2 at Heathrow

I’ve connected at Heathrow plenty of times, but always on the same ticket and usually on the same airline. This time, however, my transatlantic ticket is on Virgin, and my intra-European ticket is on TAP; the tickets were bought at different times from different sources. I will have a checked bag. If I understand airport terminology correctly, I think this means that I won’t be considered a connecting passenger (such that Heathrow’s helpful Flight Connections Guide isn’t going to do me any good).

I think what I’ll need to do is this: Arrive at T3, go through Passport Control (e-gates?), retrieve my bag at Baggage Claim, stroll innocently through the Customs hall, and then walk to T2. At T2, it’s just a matter of finding the TAP desk to check my bag (or maybe there’s a self-check kiosk), and then going through Security and whatever else till I get airside. Is this correct? Have I overlooked anything?

My only real confusion is the walk from T3 to T2. In looking at the map of T3’s Arrivals hall, I don’t see where it’s possible to walk to T2. Does anyone know? I’m sure it’ll be signed well once I’m actually there, but it’s nice to know ahead of time roughly where I need to be.

You can walk by using the subway passages to/from the Underground station that serves both terminals. It is possible and a bit shorter to do it at the surface level, but the route is not straightforward so if I were you I would stick with the subway route.

You could go the airside connecting route if you weren't checking a bag.

You are right. You are not a connecting passenger. Heathrow is a layover airport for you and not a connection.

You have to allow time to go through passport control which can take up to 2 hours unless you have something specific that allows you to go around that.

As was said above, once you get your bag and walk through customs, you can walk to terminal 2 via the underground passageway. Allow 10 to 20 minutes for that walk depending upon your speed with luggage and the crowds in the passageway.

At Terminal 2, you may have to wait to check your bag and there will definitely be lines at security.

Given the unknowns, I would allow 5 hours because I am not a gambler willing to risk being forced to buy new tickets if I miss the second flight.

Thanks, Marco and Continental. Very helpful. (And as luck would have it, my layover is five hours long!)

Timely question! If I may tag onto the question, next week I will arrive at T2 at 11:45 (Air New Zealand) and depart from T5 on a separate ticket with British Air (with only carry on luggage) at 15:20. I know I will need to go through passport control in T2, but how would I get to T5 in a timely manner so I can catch that next flight? Will the transportation be within the secure area or will I have to go through security at T5? Now I’m worried I won’t have enough time.

I arrived at T3 on a Virgin flight in June and had to meet my companions in T2 (we were staying in London) and I took the underground passage mentioned - it is a walk, but it's a very well marked walk once you get past Passport controls, etc. The E Gates REALLY speed you through, and there were Heathrow workers ensuring the lines moved. Make sure your feet get placed in the correct location for the E Gates :)

Thanks, Teresa. I used your suggested link. Worked beautifully. I now know what to expect.

What do you need to have access to the E gates to go through passport control quickly?

To use the E gates at Heathrow and presumably other U.K. airports you need a biometric passport issued by one of the eligible countries.

It you scroll down a little in the link there is a drawing of the biometric symbol that should be on the cover of your passport. For US passports I believe the cover is thicker feeling than the older non biometric version. The cover includes security features to prevent scanning of your passport info when closed.
