I've read where you can purchase the Half Fare card at the train stations, so I will assume that there is no restrictions regarding nationality, i.e. Americans traveling on vacation can purchase the card even though they are not Swiss. My question involves the Junior Card. Does anyone know if there are restrictions? It doesn't ever specify on the SBB website. If there aren't any nationality requirements, I'd be a fool not to purchase one (30 CHF) for my 15 y.o. daughter for our trip.
That's correct, you would be a fool if you didn't purchase the Junior Card - it's a marvelous bargain. The alternative would be for you to get a free Swiss Family Card before you leave the USA. If you order a rail pass before you leave you can get the "free" Swiss Family Card. It acts just like the Junior Card (which is NOT free). You daughter rides EVERYWHERE with you for free on all forms of transport...as long as you the parent has a valid ticket. Even the super expensive private rail lines like the Jungfrau or the Schilthorn will be totally free for her.
