I am now trying to cost out a point-to-point rail ticket from Venice to Lauterbrunnen and Lauterbrunnen to Lausanne. I am having trouble. It says it only works for dates from now to June 3rd...do I have to wait until June to price these vs. a railpass. Any help on how to determine prices for these two legs of the trip for point to point tickets? Could someone direct me to the right place? Thanks
SBB only shows prices for travel within Switzerland for the next 30 days, but they won't change much if at all. That 29.60 CHF is the Half-Fare price. That is the default setting for SBB and it is confusing. The actual regular fare from Lauterbrunnen to Lausanne is 59.20 if you go the faster route (via Bern) and 63.20 CHF if you go the slower and scenic Golden Pass route. From Venice to Lauterbrunnen the price depends on which route you take. You may be able to get nice discounts on advance purchase tickets from Trenitalia for Venice to Milan, and Milan to either Spiez or Luzern, depending which route you choose. Or from Venice to Innsbruck if you go via Austria. These are called Smart Fares and you can find them on the Trenitalia website.
Booked on the Swiss Rail site, 132 CHF is the standard 2nd class fare for Venice-Lauterbrunnen. Booked well in advance, you can get a discount fare of 96.00 CHF. Unfortunately, since you will be departing from Italy and not Switzerland, you cannot pick up your tickets in Venice. Swiss Rail will mail them to you, but the fee is 45.00 CHF. Your best route is Venezia Santa Lucia-Milano Centrale-Spiez-Interlaken Ost-Lauterbrunnen, departing at 07:50 and arriving at 15:25. Here is the way to get the lowest fares. Book Venezia S. Lucia-Milano Centrale on the Trenitalia site well in advance (up to four months allowed) to get a Mini fare as low as €9.00. The standard 2nd class fare is €35.00. Book Milano Centrale-Spiez on the Trenitalia site well in advance (up to three months allowed) to get a Smart fare as low as €19.00. The standard 2nd class fare is €59.50. Buy a ticket for Spiez to Lausanne (one connection in Interlaken Ost) when you get to Spiez. The 2nd class fare is 8.80 CHF. No discount for advance booking.
No, you don't have to wait. Just put in a date for later this month. The train schedules and fares don't change much when the schedules are d. It's 132CHF from Venice to Lauterbrunnen. Lauterbrunnen to Lausanne is 29.60CHF. Also, if you are considering a Eurail pass, you only get a 25% discount on Swiss transportation once you go beyond Interlaken Ost and into the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Doesn't work on the bus inside the valley either.
