We will be traveling on the Avalon Felicity Oct 6-13 2013, leaving Amsterdam Oct 6 and arriving Basal Switzerland Oct 13. On Oct 13, we will be traveling from Basel to Lucerne for three nights Oct 13, 14, 15 & then depart on Oct 16 and stay one night in Zurich before flying back to St Louis MO. While in Switzerland, we would like to see Gimmelwald, Jungfraujock, and Mt Pilatus and sail Lake Lucerne. Our question is if the Swiss Rail Pass would be the best choice logistically & financially? Our other options would be to buy daily rail passes or take pre-arranged tours.
Jay, after all is said and done, you'll probably want the half-fare card. For instance, the jungfrau and Mt. Pilatus golden pass are pricey. If you are going up to Gimmelwald, chances are you will want to also do Schilthorn, also a little pricey. You may have to spend time doing the math yourself to determine whether the 3or 4 day pass is better then point to point or half-fare card.
With all of those journeys you don't even need to price point to point tickets. The savings you'll gain from a Half Fare card will more than pay for itself. For added flexibility of hopping on and off wherever you want at any time you want then the Swiss Pass is obviously the best for that. Both will save you significant money over point to point.
